From Bulb to Brand

case in point: Raider

Raider was a typical Taiwanese family business. As an early success in the emerging ODM LED lightbulb manufacturing decades ago, its iconic chairman was now facing a dual crisis: a bottomed-out saturated market with falling prices and ever-decreasing demand, and the prickly matter of his succession.

The Challenge

Light bulbs were a classic commodity: interchangeable, price-driven, and function-focused. Now, his company had to pivot to integrated LED fixtures that differentiated through design, brand, and user experience, and Raider’s new products had to become part of a curated consumer environment.

The three children who took over the chairman’s role had to pivot the company to prevent it from sinking. They had to create in-house design capabilities, explore new manufacturing and sourcing options, manage inventory for a multitude of new SKUs. It is no wonder they never got around to marketing and branding.

Our solutions

We vertically introduced customer-centric thinking as the company’s new DNA. We created iconic product stories which were expressed through design, identity and packaging, allowing Raider to become a category captain, managing assortments, shelf layout, pricing guidance, and replenishment for retailers.

We created a portfolio of easy-to-manage sub-brands and products, together with the necessary MarCom collateral to launch them in existing and new (international) markets.

The Challenge

Our primary role is to create a unique story: a powerful narrative of the guest journey that includes site relevance, cultural meanings, history, geography, and the living environment. The goal is also practical: to align all parties to create a consistent product that can stand out in a competitive market and be profitable from the soft opening onwards.

Our solutions

As storywriters, we find the unique core story that gives relevance to the entire project. As experience designers, we know all the touchpoints in the guest journey and know how to activate them. We work closely with developers, architects, interior designers, brand portfolio managers and operational managers to ensure all parties are aligned with the narrative.

Green Pioneering

case in point: Green Flash

The mission: help build a green diesel (HVO) company in a country where renewable fuels are virtually unknown and where both relevant regulation and government support are absent. The state-owned oil company has a virtual monopoly and sells subsidized regular diesel to a traditional SME market that is only slowly becoming aware of sustainability and ESG. Impossible? Hardly.

Our solutions

We explored the market, analyze the challenges and obstacles, and adapted the brand identity before using it to build a flexible and lean MarCom strategy that was used to approach 800+ leads with sector-specific collateral. We used our agile approach – building the plane as we were taking off – to maximize the efficiency of Green Flash’ very small but dedicated local team and cramped time schedule.
